Supporting you when it matters most.

At Ivor Howatson & Son, we understand that losing a loved one is one of life’s most difficult experiences. During such an emotional time, the practical arrangements can feel overwhelming. Our role is to gently take that stress and pressure away, guiding you with care, compassion, and professionalism every step of the way.

From the moment you contact us, our dedicated team is here to support you. We handle all the necessary arrangements — from bringing your loved one into our care, to liaising with hospitals, hospices, or local authorities, completing required documentation, and organising the funeral service itself. We take care of the details so you can focus on what truly matters: remembering and honouring your loved one.

Every family is unique, and every life deserves to be celebrated in a meaningful way. Whether you are planning a traditional burial, a cremation, a direct cremation or a more personalised service, we listen carefully to your wishes and guide you through the available options with clarity and sensitivity. There is no pressure, no rush — just thoughtful support at a pace that feels right for you.

We also understand that financial concerns can add to stress during this time. Our team will provide clear, transparent information about costs and options, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable with every decision.

Above all, we believe in providing reassurance. You are not alone. With experience, empathy, and respect, we are here to shoulder the responsibility, allowing you the space to grieve, reflect, and be together as a family.

When you need us most, we are here — quietly, respectfully, and wholeheartedly.

Our team are dedicated to guiding and supporting you through each step of the process, beginning with the first steps outlined below:

  • Once the death has been confirmed by a medical professional (usually a doctor or a registered specialist nurse), we will attend and escort your loved one back to our chapel of rest, or, if the emergency services have been involved, back to the chapel of rest at the hospital
  • The deceased’s medical records will then be sent to the medical examiner by their GP/Doctors surgery
  • Within 10 to 14  days of your loved one passing, you will be contacted by a Medical Examiner, who will have spoken with the doctor/specialist nurse who confirmed the death, the Medical Examiner will explain the cause of death, and provide you with an opportunity to express any concerns over the care of the person who has died. A second Medical Examiner will also contact you and again will go through the process.
  • Providing there are no concerns, the Medical Examiner will send the completed Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the Registrar’s Office in the District where the death occurred
  • Upon receipt of the Medical Certificate, the Registrars Office will contact you to register the death accordingly
  • Once you have registered, please contact us to make an appointment to begin the funeral arrangements
